Golden looking deep-fried prawns are good as an appetizer or as a main dish.
Recipe Ingredients
For the Prawns/Shrimp
- Prawns
- Salt
- Oil for frying
For the Batter
- Flour
- Baking powder
- Ground black pepper
- Egg, lightly beaten
- Water
- Fish sauce
HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE
For the Shrimp
- Peel and devein the prawns, but keep the tails on. Sprinkle prawns with salt. Set aside.
For the Batter
- Combine the flour, baking powder, ground black pepper. Add the egg, cold water, and fish sauce. Set aside.
Putting it All Together
- In a pan, heat oil until hot.
- Holding the tail of the prawn, dip the prawn into the batter using a spoon. It is better if you use a spoon because the batter is quite thick and it is much easier to use it.
- Deep fry the prawn for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Put only 3 to 4 prawns at a time to avoid overcrowding the pan. Continue until finished.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
How to Store
Store in an airtight container and can be kept in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
What to Serve with this Dish
This dish is best if served with a dipping sauce. Please try my favorite Filipino Sweet and Sour Sauce because it goes well with these fried prawns. You can also serve this dish as an appetizer, or as a main dish.

I can’t wait to make these! My husband made the best deep fried prawns! I know he didn’t use fish sauce. So my question is, do you think it makes a big difference using it? If so, could I substitute that with Old Bay seasoning? Thanks much!
Adelyn
Hi Audrey,
You do not have to add the fish sauce, and yes you can definitely use your own seasoning.
Cheers,
Adelyn
