    How to Cook Ube

    Grated ube cooked in an instant pot or steamed. This ube can be used in any baking or cooking recipes you plan.

    Ingredients Notes and Substitutions

    Ube - also called Purple Yam. You can use fresh or frozen. If it’s frozen, thaw the ube first. If you want to use fresh ube, peel the skin first, grate the ube or cut it into cubes before cooking them. 

    How To Make It

    For Instant Pot:

    • Put two cups of water in the instant pot. Place the trivet or rack. 
    • Place the ube into the round pan. Make sure the round pan fits in your instant pot. Cover the pan with aluminum foil. Place the pan on top of the trivet.
    • Turn the instant pot on, select the manual setting to pressure cook, adjust the time to 8 minutes, then start. First, make sure the sealing lever is on. 
    • Allow a 10-minute natural release before taking the pan out from the instant pot. 
    • When removing the pan, use a couple of tongs or heat-resistant gloves.

    For Steaming:

    1. Prepare the steamer and add an adequate amount of water. Turn the stove on and bring water to a boil. 
    2. Place the ube in the round pan and cover with aluminum foil. 
    3. Place the pan on the steamer and let it steam for 15-20 minutes. 
    4. Remove the pan from the steamer. 

    Freezing and Storing Instructions

    Place the cooked ube in an airtight container. Keep in the fridge for 5 days or in the freezer for up to two months.

    • Place the ube into the round pan. Make sure the round pan fits in your instant pot. Cover the pan with aluminum foil. Place the pan on top of the trivet.
    • Turn the instant pot on, select the manual setting to pressure cook, adjust the time to 8 minutes, then start. First, make sure the sealing lever is on.

    If using a whole fresh ube, peel the ube, cut into cubes, boil until they are tender, and then mash if needed.
